Who Is Your Superhero?

Who is your superhero?

You don’t have to look any further than the movie box office to know that the superhero theme is hot. When people stampede into theatres to get the best seats for the latest film, you know the craze is out of control. But isn’t it human nature to idolize the mysterious one with special powers who seems to have it all together? Whether it be a movie character, a sports star or a political figure, we long for role models to emulate. So who is your superhero?

When I was a kid, my superheroes were Captain Kangaroo, Cowboy Bob and Janie, and Shari Lewis with her puppet, Lambchop. These were the bigger than life personalities I watched every weekday on children’s television. One of my favorite shows was Kindergarten College which was taped right here in Indianapolis. When I was five years old, my mom signed me up to be in the audience. To my delight and surprise, I was chosen. Mom says she dressed me in a red jumper with a white blouse but I don’t remember these details. The only thing I recall is the thrill of personally meeting one of my heroes.

Being on Kindergarten College was everything I dreamed. Everyone was just as nice in person as they were on TV. Plus I was able to be right there with teacher “Pat” on the set. What a thrill! At the same time, I didn’t anticipate witnessing everything that went on behind the scenes. I felt like Dorothy spying on the Great Oz behind the curtain. In that one experience, I came to realize this truth. My hero was not a one woman act. This was a lot for a child to process. I don’t think I totally understood the significance of what I observed until much later in life.

None of our heroes make it to the top alone. Success is built on the effort and support of the many we never see who reside in the background. These unseen heroes are just as important as the one in the spotlight. Maybe more important since without them the show would not go on.

At times, patients treat their doctors like they are superheroes. They perceive us as somehow superhuman and invincible. But in reality, we are no different than anyone else. We feel tired, frustrated and just plain grumpy sometimes. Without our support staff, we couldn’t do anything. They keep us organized and on time (or at least they try). When a patient is angry, they get the brunt of their ire, long before they see us for their exam. They are the underappreciated, behind the scenes workers that make everything possible.

This past week was Nurse’s Appreciation Week. I want to take this opportunity to give a shout out to all the nurses (and nurse practitioners) plus medical assistants from my past to my present. Sometimes when I’m out of sorts, it may not seem like you are appreciated. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. I may be too busy or preoccupied to say it but you’re AWESOME.

Who is my superhero? Each and every nurse who diligently works in the background to keep my patients safe and satisfied. You make me look good. Don’t forget to put on your cape!
