Time Flows Like a River

time flows like a river

Time flows like a river . . . crashing over boulders in wild torrents . . . then moving in slow, lazy currents. We modify our passage through the stream, yet it carries us forward. The waters of time steadily course their way to the sea.

My mind struggles to comprehend how quickly time passes. No matter how diligently I try to hold them, minutes seep between my fingers. Two years have elapsed since my sister, Beth passed and an unbelievable forty-seven years since we lost our baby sister, Gaynelle. I hear their voices speak to me in the recesses of my memory. The thought of navigating this river without them seems impossible somedays.

But the river flows on. There’s no point in fighting its current.

Every day we’re given a choice: We can relax and float in the direction that the water flows, or we can swim hard against it. If we go with the river, the energy of a thousand mountain streams will be with us . . . if we resist the river, we will feel rankled and tired as we tread water, stuck in the same place.

Elizabeth Lesser, author

How often I’ve tried to fight the current of God’s direction in my life. I struggle to keep my hand on the tiller or long to sit along the shore allowing the water to pass me by. But the Lord keeps coming back, gently nudging me forward into grand adventures I never imagined in my own dreams. If I’ve gained any wisdom in my life, this one thing I know: It’s useless to fight against God.

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

Proverbs 19:21 NIV

Time flows like a river down to the sea. Rather than bucking the current, I’ll allow God to direct my course, joining in the work He’s already begun. There’s no promise of an easy ride, yet His hand is upon me. The Lord will see me through to the end. When my boat finally spills into the ocean, time as I know it will come to an end. Then I’ll jump onto the sand and celebrate as my sisters run down the shore to meet me once more.
