Prayer: A Pathway Toward Peace of Mind

Chronic stress is at an all-time high. In a recent survey by the American Psychological Association, a majority of Americans said their stress levels had increased and around 75% reported physical or emotional symptoms due to stress. Many factors contribute to this up tic but according to the Bureau of Statistics, money is the biggest stressor with work coming in second. In a world full of worry, peace of mind is an elusive concept which is often difficult, if not impossible, to grasp. Yet, there are means to seek help.*

In previous blog posts, I’ve mentioned several tactics to overcome chronic stress and the resulting anxiety. Self-nurturing methods such as eating a healthy diet, regular activity, mindfulness exercises, and professional counseling are always helpful. If possible, refocus your mind from negative to positive thoughts, seek joy in the little things, and learn to be content with what you have in order to lessen your stress level.

These last three techniques and more are mapped out in chapter 4 of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippian church. This is a great resource when seeking spiritual ways to combat chronic stress and anxiety. But to win this battle, we must seek a higher power rather than simply depending on our own willpower.

Prayer is the key—the secret weapon enabling us to overcome chronic stress. When a world of worry crashes down on your soul, allow prayer to be your pathway to peace of mind.

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Philippians 4: 6-7 Message

John Wesley listed prayer as one of the three means of grace along with scripture and the sacraments. He saw it as a conduit to the unmerited gift of God’s favor and love. Through prayer, we have a direct line of communication with God. What an amazing privilege.

And what’s even more amazing is the Holy Spirit intervening for us when we’re so lost we don’t know the words to pray. He relays the unspoken desires of our heart to God and pleads on our behalf.

Sometimes when a world of worry comes crashing down on my soul, the name of Jesus is the only prayer I have to lift toward heaven. But I have found this is more than enough to open the floodgates of grace. The powerful name of Jesus recited like a mantra sends a wave of peace throughout my body like nothing else.

Flowery words are not necessary when communicating with God. The simple act of coming to Him with your concerns is pleasing to Him. Good human parents long for special connections with their children and grandchildren. How much more, does our heavenly Father desire a relationship with us, His children? The intimacy within this relationship gives us strength and courage for whatever this earthly life brings our way. You can depend on it.

As Eugene Peterson paraphrased in the Message Bible, “let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers.” When you send your concerns along with thanksgiving toward Heaven in one package, a mystical transformation happens. God through His Holy Spirit, places guardrails around your heart and your mind. He may not remove the stressors or take you out of the battle, but He will give you a sense of calm and comfort within it.

Prayer becomes a pathway to peace of mind—a peace which surpasses all understanding. Connecting with God, recognizing that He is in control, and (thank goodness) I am not, makes all the difference.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.
