Be Not Afraid: Advice from a Shepherd King

be not afraid

I was made to be a warrior. Not the kind who wields sword or spear like a medieval knight. But one who dons the sturdy armor essential for spiritual warfare. Slings and arrows of evil fly all around me. Yet, I refuse to cower in fear. The Lord stands at my side. His angels call out His command:

Be not afraid.

Isn’t it interesting that some form of ‘Fear Not’ is stated in the Bible over a hundred times? Obviously, life as we know it generates tremendous apprehension in a variety of circumstances. Who would believe the terror we’ve experienced over the past two years wrought by a microscopic virus? Only in a sci-fi novel could we imagine such a situation. But it is real…and not over yet.

How as a warrior am I to cope? Another would-be soldier, thousands of years ago, wrote songs or psalms offering a solution for fearful situations. David lived as a shepherd long before he was crowned as a king. He fought lions and bear to protect his sheep decades before he wore the armor of a military leader. He learned to overcome fear out in fields under star studded skies by trusting God. Here are his words.

You, Lord, are my shepherd. I will never be in need. You let me rest in fields of green grass. You lead me to streams of peaceful water, and you refresh my life.

David acknowledged God as his sole provider. The Lord met his every need, even sustenance for his soul.

You are true to your name, and you lead me along the right paths. I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won’t be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd’s rod makes me feel safe.

Even though, God directed David’s steps, sometimes his journey took him along perilous pathways. Nevertheless, David was not afraid. The great Shepherd walked with him. He was never alone.

You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows. Your kindness and love will always be with me, each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, Lord.

Psalm 23 CEV

Enemies surrounded David throughout his life. Even one of his own sons attempted to usurp his throne. Despite the evil around him, David recognized God’s overwhelming blessing and relished the thought of spending eternity with the Lord.

As one warrior to another, I seek advice from David’s words of wisdom. I am no less blessed than this earthly shepherd king though God honored him as a man after his own heart. To walk in courage like him, I must trust in the Lord’s provision and move forward arm in arm with my heavenly King.

I will not be afraid for the Lord truly is my Shepherd.

My prayer? Oh Lord give me the mind of a warrior that has been taught to fear your name, the soul of a prophet with the tongue and courage to speak truth though I be surrounded by those that despise it and the heart of a boy that believes he can slay a giant.
